Apart from its robust contribution in the GDP of the country, the banking sector of the country has also experienced increase in the employment over the years. There has been a 41% increase in the employment in the banking sector of the country in the recent period and the sector not employs around 450,000 people, thereby contributing significantly to the economic growth of the country. Recent dynamics in the banking and financial sector The increasing industrial and commercial growth of the country in the recent periods, has led to a significant increase in the demand for the services of the financial sector of the country. This is primarily attributed to the fact that over the years, due to the increasing prospects, the industrial sector of the country has been attracting considerable investments from all parts of the globe, which has increased the activities in the banking and financial sector of the country (Allen and Powell 2012). Oligopolistic Market Structure: Root of the problems The market structure of the banking industry, however, in spite of the presence of many supply-side players, predominantly shows the traits of an oligopolistic market. This is because of the presence of four big players in this sector, which includes the Westpac Corporation, the Commonwealth Bank, the National Australia Bank and the New Zealand Banking Group (Tyers 2015). These Big Four in the banking sector captures nearly four fifth of the total market share in the country, which can be seen from the following figure: The presence of this oligopolistic trend in the market, gives rise to highly skewed distribution of power in the market, with these four banks enjoying immense influence on the market and thereby creating huge barriers and competitions for any other firm existing or trying to enter the market. Much of the clientele of the country are also captured by these banks, who over the last few years have earned outstanding profit over the years. However, these immense oligopolistic powers of the banks have also led to several issues of severe concern in the financial sector of the country, which has led to immense loss of credibility and prospects by the banking and financial industry, thereby decreasing the overall welfare of the economy and leading to the proposal of establishment of the Royal Commission. Problems in the banking sector leading to the proposal of Royal Commission The uneven distribution of power and market influence in the banking and financial sector of the country, along with the increasing prevalence of different lobbies and politically backed interest groups in the country, has led to the creation of several crippling problems in the financial sector of the country. These are in turn causing immense harm to the credibility as well as profitability of this sector, thereby leading to long term damages in the economy of the country, in terms of loss of welfare of the people who are directly or are indirectly related to the banking sector of the country (Shamsuddin and Xiang 2012). In the recent period, one of the problems, which have been plaguing the banking sector of the country, is the series of scandals, which have allegedly occurred, primarily in the big four banks of the country, especially the Commonwealth Bank of the country. The Commonwealth Bank of the country, being one of the largest lenders in the country, has experienced immense increase in the share of profitability and clientele in the country as well as in the international financial scenario. In the recent period, however, the Bank has been accused of serious money laundering activities and breach in the corporate norms for multiple times (Abc.net.au, 2018). The problem however, does not remain constricted to the Commonwealth Bank only as all the other major players in this sector have been criticized for indulging in unethical malpractices. With the help of the unfair usage of lobby powers and biased political support and for the purpose of benefit maximization of the targeted interest group, the major players of the financial and banking sector of the country have increasingly participated in highly unethical practices. They have been increasingly working towards the objective of personal profit optimization, even at the cost of the loss of welfare of their clients as well as the economy as a whole, which has given the market an image of an exploitative and anti-consumer, pro-supplier type of market. The misconducts in the contemporary banking sector of the country primarily consists of malpractices like money laundering, rigging, providing misleading financial suggestions to the customers and indulging in forgery of information and fact distorting scandals for the sole incentive of welfare maximization of the welfare groups (INQUIRY 2016). The institutions in the banking sector, apart from serious money laundering, have also engaged in forging the signatures of their clients, which is one of the serious forms of corporate misconducts on part of the companies. Using these, the banks have opened large numbers of unauthorized investment accounts in the name of their clients, without their permission. This illegal and unethical way of operations was implemented by the accused banks, primarily to paint a false picture of increased credibility and potentiality in the global financial framework and attain higher share of global clientele, thereby increasing their business through unfair competitions. These companies have also misguided the customers hugely with their investment decisions, which led to loss of millions of dollars, thereby gaining immense negative feedbacks for the company (Batrouney 2016). The unrest reached its pinnacle with the collapse of the WestPoint property developers, who went bankrupt falling prey to the corruptions in the banking sector. The loss was as high as $388 million and affected the welfare of nearly 4,300 investors. This, along with the overall negative implications in the financial sector led to immense loss of welfare of the clientele, thereby increasing the unrest and decreasing In spite of several earlier inquiries, there has not been any such reform in the conditions of the contemporary banking sector of the country, which in its turn led to the need for implementation of an enabled, unbiased and capable investigating body especially for these issues, which in turn led to the proposal of establishment of the Royal Commission. Scope of the Royal Commission Royal Commissions, in general, refer to the ad-hoc formal inquiry, which are established by the governments of the countries for the purpose of investigating several issues of concern, prevailing in the economy. On 30 November 2017, the government of Australia proposed the establishment of a commission to investigate the alleged misconducts in the banking industry of the country. Among the scopes of the commission, the primary one is of investigating the nature, magnitude and gravity of the corporate misconducts and the causal factors behind such misconducts (Maine 2016). The commission is also expected to be bestowed with the job of investigating the loopholes and inefficiencies, which are currently existing in the legal and regulatory frameworks of the country, taking advantage of which the companies have indulged in such activities. The Commission is expected to not only investigate the issues prevailing in the banking sector and the presence of lobbies and vested interest groups in the industry but also to find out the impact of these serious corporate misconducts on the demand side players of this sector. The Commission is also required to frame reports and prescribe recommendations, which can be feasibly undertaken by the government of the country, for combating these issues of misconduct and malpractices of the major banking institutions in the economy of Australia, thereby bringing back credibility and prosperity to the financial sector again (Bbc.com 2018). Superiority of the Commission The proposed Commission is different from the already implemented inquiries in the sense that, unlike the latter it is specifically expected to operate in the domain of misconduct of the financial sector of the country. The Commission is expected to conduct an inquiry which is broad and far sighted than the previous ones, with the purpose of solving the problems in depth and working towards developing a sustained and working regulatory and vigilance framework for the banking and financial sector of the country. For this purpose, the Commission is also expected to be empowered to compel the witnesses to be cooperating in providing relevant documents (Jacobs 2018). Challenges anticipated In establishing the Commission, several hurdles can be faced by the government of the country. Firstly, the operative framework being already congested with regulations and inquiries, another inquiry might just add to the confusion in the industry, without creating any noticeable reforms. The roles of the Commission, on the other hand, has not been clearly demarcated yet, which may create confusions regarding the areas where it should intervene and investigate and what falls out of its jurisdiction (Theconversation.com, 2018). It is serving to approximately 200000 customers and more, all over the country (Fearn, 2016). Research Process Instrumental Tool On this report, in Vodafone New Zealand, the instrumental tool used was carrying out an interview. This research project is based on the qualitative analysis that was done through the interview process of the area manager of Vodafone NZ (Akobeng, 2016). The manager of Vodafone New Zealand answered all the interview questions well. The interview responses were viable for 88% response rate. Limitations In this survey of organizational research, there were few limitations incurred. First, the manager was reluctant on giving full information on the organization. Secondly, the manager majorly focused on the positive side of organizational communication strategies in the organization and was reluctant to provide any negative communication instances in the organization. Lastly, the manager focused more on other successes of the organization rather than focusing on organizational communication. The above limitations hindered the scope of the study. Findings and Discussion From the survey results acquired from the interview regarding the issues of communication and maintaining ethics within Vodafone New Zealand, various findings were discovered and below is an analysis of the issues done. They were various issues that surfaced. There are various theories that govern organizational communication in companies. They help organizations to appreciate and comprehend relationships and communication behaviors (Papa et al. 2008) Organizational Structure Organization communication is influenced by the structure of an organization. The way an organization is arranged influences how relationships are formed in the organization. For instance, in Vodafone New Zealand, from the interview responses, it is organized into a functional structure, where employees are each designed into specific tasks to perform. Through the organization structure, an organization can determine its strengths and weaknesses. Hierarchy According to the bureaucratic theory by Max Weber, every organization needs to have a hierarchical chain of command where subordinates have supervisors to answer to. These would create a direct communication link in the organization, improving the relationships within the organization. Having chains of commands create efficiency in the organization. From the responses gathered, in Vodafone NZ organization, due to lack of hierarchical authority in the organization, there has been poor communication between the staff and the management. This has affected the decision-making process in the organization. Formalization (Rules and Procedures) To guide every communication in an organization, managers formulate policies. These rules form a resource on communication. The results from the interview with Vodafone manager indicated that this organization is guided by policies formulated by the manager himself. This has largely helped in enhancing communication among members of the organization. Time Orientation Time adjustment involves having a schedule in the organization, allocating the time for every activity and the duration. Time orientation helps in directing communication and establishing more distinct relations in the organization. From the responses gathered in this institution, findings indicate that this organization does not have a schedule, which has largely affected the efficiency in decisions made. According to Taylor (2013), states that most organizations fail due to lack of systematic management. Leadership Transformation Leadership. Leadership is a crucial aspect in enhancing communication in an organization. Bureaucracy theory of organizational communication, states that organization should choose bureaucratic leaders in accordance with the objectives of the organization. This theory believes in choosing neutral authority, where leaders will not be discriminative or practice nepotism in the organization. Such leaders promote fair communication to all members of the organization. In Vodafone, bureaucratic leaders, who promote organization communication enhancing decisions in the organization, characterize it. Organizational Culture Beliefs and Values The manager's responses to the organizational culture in Vodafone NZ, indicate that conflicts dominate the culture of the organization due to diversification in the organization. Most employees have conflicts between each other, for instance, due to the language barrier. Vodafone company lacks any form of feedback platforms to improve communication. Conclusions From the above analysis done from this survey, the followings conclusions are made from the findings identified. Organizational communication in Vodafone New Zealand is not at its best and needs improvement. They are so many gaps in the communication in this organization that needs to be looked upon. The major factor that has contributed to poor communication in this company is the organizational culture in the organization. Secondly, although the organization is characteristics by good leaders, the organization needs to adopt hierarchical authority to create better communication links within the organization. The organizational structure adopted by Vodafone has largely helped in enhancing communication in the organization. The division of labor to specific skills helps to create distinct communication channels in communication between employees and the management. Recommendations From the findings and analysis of this survey on organizational communication in Vodafone New Zealand, various recommendations are outlined that could benefit this organization. The management should organize training conferences for the employees on topics of improving communication within the organization. Additionally, the management could arrange a meeting after every two weeks, for the employees to socialize with the management and air out their opinions on the organization. This would create a friendly atmosphere, enhancing communication. The management should work on providing a feedback forum for the employees to enhancing communication within the organization. The management should also create a schedule to guide on when activities are done, with whom, where and the duration it is likely to take. Time orientation will increase the communication in the organization and reduce ambiguity. This will also create focus among employees. The management should focus on creating an organizational culture that is favorable to all employees and promotes communication, through making new policies to govern the culture. This organization should test its employees after every three months on their organizational culture commitment.This will ensure that employees are sticking to their values and following the right culture to the core. A Guide to Nouns A Guide to Nouns A Guide to Nouns By Mark Nichol A noun was traditionally described as ââ¬Å"a person, place, or thing,â⬠but some definitions further specify what can constitute a thing, including an action, an idea, a quality, or a state of existence. This post discusses types of nouns and other issues related to nouns. Classes of Nouns Abstract and Concrete Nouns Abstract nouns are those that refer to concepts or ideas, such as justice or evolution. By contrast, concrete nouns represent physical entities that can be observed by one or more senses; examples include apple, dog, and house. Some nouns have both abstract and concrete meanings- for example, a pillar is a column that serves as a commemorative object or a structural support, but by extension, the word refers to a figurative concept related to the latter sense: a principle, for example, that is part of the identity of an organization. (In addition, a person may be referred to as a pillar of the community, but although person is concrete, the person does not literally provide structural support for an edifice.) Collective Nouns A collective noun is one that, despite the lack of plural inflection, refers to a group (as in the case of committee) or to an entity consisting of multiple members (for example, government or police). In American English, such terms take a singular verb form unless the emphasis is clearly on the constituents of the collective, as in ââ¬Å"The staff were pleased to hear about the new workplace policy,â⬠though many writers (and editors) are more comfortable with a revision that more explicitly focuses on the individuals, such as ââ¬Å"Members of the staff were pleased to hear about the new workplace policy.â⬠Compound Noun A compound noun is one that consists of two or more words. Compound nouns may be closed (warlord), hyphenated (mind-set), or open (ââ¬Å"post officeâ⬠). Generally, a compound of more than two words is hyphenated, as in jack-in-the box, but a proper name consisting of more than two words is almost always open (ââ¬Å"Royal Canadian Mounted Policeâ⬠). Countable and Mass Nouns Countable nouns are those that may take an indefinite article (a or an) or a plural form, or be combined with a numeral (such as three) or a counting quantifier (such as several). Countable nouns include car, finger, and event. Mass, or uncountable, nouns, are those that do not have these properties, such as blood, equipment, and information. Many nouns have senses as both countable and mass nouns. For example, rain is an uncountable phenomenon, but one can refer to a succession of rains. Proper Nouns A proper noun is one that denotes a unique entity, such as a specific person (John), place (Earth), or thing (iPhone). Writers frequently err in capitalizing generic descriptions thought to be specific. For example, a person might be described as ââ¬Å"a Marketing Directorâ⬠; though the person does in fact hold that job title, it is not unique to that person (although it is capitalized as part of the entity description ââ¬Å"Marketing Director John Smith,â⬠which is unique). Similarly, one might be said to have ââ¬Å"earned a Masterââ¬â¢s Degreeâ⬠; although the diploma that documents conferring of the degree is unique, a degree demonstrating mastery of a particular academic discipline is distributed to numerous people, and thus the word is generic. In addition, words that, as part of a specific appellation, are capitalized are sometimes erroneously capitalized in isolation, as in ââ¬Å"the Committee.â⬠This style is common in content published by institutions and organizations (and sometimes codified in their house style guides) that refers in shorthand to a particular committee, and it is a tradition in legal text, but in most other contexts it is considered an error. Considerations About Nouns Nominalization and Conversion Avoid the jargonistic overuse of noun forms of verbs in place of the verbs themselves, itself known jargonistically as nominalization, to make sentences more concise, direct, and accessible. (For example, ââ¬Å"effect a transpositionâ⬠is easily replaced by transpose.) A related issue is conversion, by which a verb becomes a noun (as in the use of take in ââ¬Å"We filmed the scene in one takeâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s your take on that?â⬠). Many conversions are unobjectionable in isolation, but take care not to let them overwhelm your prose. Noun Plagues One obstacle to clarity, prevalent in business content, is the use of multiple nouns as adjectives describing a terminal noun, as in ââ¬Å"The topic of the webinar is compliance risk management program governance.â⬠Avoid such strings of nouns-cum-adjectives before a noun, which many people may read haltingly because even if they are familiar with the terms that constitute the phrase, they will not know until they reach the actual noun that they have come to the end of it. Revise the phrase to reflect a more relaxed syntax so that it can be read with relative lack of effort: ââ¬Å"The topic of the webinar is governance of programs pertaining to compliance risk management.â⬠Plural Forms English is maddeningly inconsistent, especially in forming plurals. For example, the plural of avocado is avocados (avocadoes is a variant), while tomato is rendered tomatoes in its plural form. (These words derive from the same language, Nahuatl, and as in the case of the name of the language, the ending sound of both native words is l, but they took different paths through Spanish.) Other problematic words include those ending in y and some words adopted from Greek and Latin; for example, plural endings for some Latin words (such as antenna and index) vary depending on sense. Another complicating category is compound nouns (such as fathers-in-law). When in doubt, consult a dictionary. (And, to be safe, when not in doubt, consult a dictionary.) Other types of nouns that may require writers to consult with a dictionary (or a style guide) so that plural forms are correctly rendered include plurals of proper nouns and for abbreviations, letters, and numerals. Career Expo Summary The Florida A & M Universityââ¬â¢s Career Expo offered numerous opportunities to the students that attended this Spring. There were many companies who participated in the expo from all over the country. When I first entered he building a police officer approached me about having a career in law enforcement. At that moment all of my nervousness and jitters vanished. My first stop was the booth occupied by Aflac insurance. I was greeted by Ms. Miriam Watkins, who was the project coordinator. She informed me about the purpose of the company and she accepted my resume. My next visit was to Liberty Mutual where I met with two representative who talked with me for a while and they just gave me a card to go online and look at the job description. After that visit I went to Cardinal Health and talked to the representative about their internships positions. The representative that was present had no information about their possible internship positions and that kind of spoiled the mood but he informed me that he would pass my resume along. After that visit, it seemed as if all the other companies were not really looking for students with my educational area. They mainly wanted general business majors or either engineering majors so I ended my day there. I really enjoyed the experience I encountered at the career expo and even though their werenââ¬â¢t many opportunities for me there, I am looking forward to the next one.... Corporate social responsibility is the method by which Starbucks engages consumers and non-business stakeholders, the branding strategy that identifies Starbucks as a significant contributor to the social condition. Regardless of whether Starbucks is actually attempting to improve its reputation or whether the charity it provides is legitimate, such efforts gives the business the appropriate competitive edge that it desires in order to compete with other, localized coffee houses that attempt to build a mom and pop shop mentality for consumers that are interested in fine coffee experiences wit h knowledgeable staff members. What, though, does Starbucks actually do in order to ensure that its quality reputation for responsible business behavior brings value to the entire business model? Primarily, Starbucks establishes the agricultural supply chain utilizing foreign coffee producers that continues to bring extended value to citizens of the United States. The United States, currently, imposes zero or limited tariffs on coffee products that are procured from foreign nations in order to ensure that the American population maintains the volume desired for their consuming needs. This has many advantages for foreign coffee producers, as the product cannot be procured domestically due to climate and, thus, Starbucks is able to exploit opportunities for cheap importation. By giving more buying power to the producers along the supply chain, and then effectively utilizing promotion to, essentially, deceive the regulatory forces that attempt to drive compliance, they are able to buil d a positive brand reputation and negate the attitudes and regulatory powers of many domestic government entities. Giving buyers more power along the supply chain has considerable advantages to the Starbucks company, as they can control pricing and make the individuals working on foreign soils believe they are being done a favor by being expertly exploited for their resources, trust, and willingness to role model these corporate behaviors. Though much of this is simply subjective, there is evidence that such exploitations are known and applauded by the internal governance systems at Starbucks. The business makes considerable loans and grants to foreign coffee growers, which makes it favorable to delay sales of product until the pricing on the market for commodities is complimentary (Starbucks 26). Total commitment in loan guarantees for Starbucks exceeds $6 million, thus giving farmers and Starbucks the competitive advantages required to sustain a positive image in corporate social responsibility. Furthermore, Starbucks, having established that much of its competitive advantage comes from maintaining a positive CSR image, has established a supplier network code of conduct which ensures that product suppliers are keeping up with the corporate image that is so necessary for Starbucks to maintain its position in the market.
